Mental Health is a Social Justice Issue

The state of mental health in the African American communities is impacting the family system and the community as a whole. If we do not begin to address the mental, physical, and emotional trauma that we have experienced as a people for generations to come we will not be able to survive. The African American community is in a state of emergency and we must begin to change our consciousness so we can begin to heal individually and collectively.

Ithemba Counseling believes that we can change our consciousness by following the thought process of Martin Luther King Jr. from one of his letters from Birmingham Jail.

Ithemba Counseling is looking to do its part by creating a space where African American people can begin that process of healing for individuals and families. Ithemba Counseling knows if one is suffering all are suffering, so mental health must be a priority in the African American communities for community healing.

In a real sense, all life is inter-related. All men are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly affects all indirectly. I can never be what I ought to be until you are what you ought to be, and you can never be what you ought to be until I am what I ought to be. This is the inter-related structure of reality.
- Dr. Martin Luter King Jr.
